More than just a pastime or mode of transportation, sailing is a way of life that has the power to change the way we see the world. Sailing enables us to carefully observe and appreciate wind, to master complex skills and gain confidence in all situations, and finally, to join a community of sailors who share our passion.
For over 30 years the Lake Calhoun Sailing School (LCSS) has offered a safe and welcoming environment for youth and adults to experience the wonder and joy of sailing. From our humble start with only four sailboats and a handful of students to the more than 90 sailboats and over 1000 participants last year, LCSS owes much to our passionate and generous supporters.
There are countless stories in our history of new students overcoming fear and inhibition to become life-long sailors at LCSS. There are the sailors younger than five who timidly venture out in the Parent/Child class and subsequently return every summer, eventually becoming staff instructors. As well there are the adults who try sailing for the first time and fall in love, wishing they had started sooner.
We hope to increase the number of people who make sailing a part of their lives by providing financial assistance to those in need.
Through generous donations from the community, LCSS continues to offer scholarships for our sailing classes. In 2017, we provided over 50 partial and full scholarships for two-week youth and adult sailing camps. For the second year in a row, in partnership with the Minneapolis Police Activity League (PAL), we introduced sailing, tuition free, to a wonderful group of kids that otherwise would not have the opportunity. This fall, we hosted a group of ten students from Anne Sullivan elementary school for a day of sailing, mapmaking, and navigation on our Ensign Keelboats. Although these students were recent immigrants to Minnesota and are still learning to speak English, the universal language of laughter and joy was heard all day.
The mission of Lake Calhoun Sailing School is to teach sailing to all in a fun and supportive environment and foster a vibrant sailing community in the city of lakes. By offering affordable and inclusive sailing classes to sailors of all ages, we are committed to sharing this wonderful sport of sailing with everyone.
We rely on your support. Whether you are a current sailor, lover of the lakes, share our enthusiasm for the sport, or a believer in our community, we ask that your show your support with a donation.
Thank you for your contribution to the Lake Calhoun Sailing School!
